When running a Linux guest in VMWare Fusion, the ‘~’ (tilde) key is remapped to the ‘§’ key. Here’s how to bring the tilde back to its natural place on the Mac keyboard.
In the Linux guest, create the file ~/.xmodmaprc
(for Red Hat) or ~/.Xmodmap
(for SUSE), with the following line:
keycode 94 = grave asciitilde
Save the file and then restart X.
Note that this only works for X, i.e., it doesn’t work when your runlevel
is smaller than 5.
